Jacob Lawrence: The Fredrick Douglass and Harriett Tubman Series of 1938-1940
January 27, 2012-September 8, 2012
Ellen Harkins Wheat, Art Historian, describes Jacob Lawrence’s Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman series from the late 1930s present as the dramatic biographies of two American abolitionists who lived around the time of the Civil War. Taken together, the paintings have an extraordinary conceptual unity and visual eloquence. Although completed very early in Lawrence’s career, these two series embody some of the artist’s strongest work. The sixty-three paintings were part of a gift to Hampton University in 1968 from the private foundation, The Harmon Foundation, an organization that supported African American art.

February 13, 2012
Yasmin Levy’s deep, spiritual singing, passionate vocal delivery and striking good looks continue to entrance fans new and old around the world. Her emotive and distinctive style brings a new interpretation to the medieval Ladino/Judeo Spanish song by incorporating more modern sounds from Andalusia and Persia. Of her unique style, the artist herself says: “I am proud to combine the two cultures of Landino and Flamenco, while mixing in some Middle Eastern influences. I am embarking on a 500 year old musical journey, exploring the musical memories of the old Moorish and Jewish-Spanish world and introducing some influences from the Arab world.” She comes to The American on her second tour of the U.S. This will also include concerts in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. She recently completed a five city tour in Turkey and, in total, she has played more than 80 shows in 19 different countries on her recent tour which coincided with the release of her latest CD, Sentir.
