African American

Our "first from the sea, first to the stars" city is the oldest continuous English-speaking settlement in North America. That's just one of many momentous turning points in Hampton's and our nation's history

African American

Hampton was the site of America’s first organized teaching of African Americans. From the first Africans who arrived at Old Point Comfort in 1619 to the Hampton University students who were selected to train as Tuskegee Airmen during World War II, Hampton’s African American Heritage is rich and intriguing.
